Stephen George and Partners take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge for Respect!
Thu 4th June 2009
After an overnight stop at Hawes Youth(!) Hostel it was an early rise for the eleven intrepid hikers to set off from Horton in Ribblesdale into the cloud surrounding Peak number one: Pen-y-Ghent. After this a ten mile trudge through peat bog was rewarded by a picnic lunch under the arches of the famous Batty Moss Railway Viaduct. Well into the afternoon before reaching the summit of Whernside we were met there by a blast of icy wind and hail. Becky James, Holly Cufflin, Mick Barker and Chong Hing Ow settling for these two peaks decided to take the early bath option at this point. With the weather gradually improving for the others it was on to, Ingleborough for the third and final Peak. Adam Thurston, John Morfey and Nick Austin pressing on to beat the challenge time back to Horton of 12 hours, which they did comfortably! They were followed an hour later by Chris, Mary, Jennie Wicks and Tony James. After an exhilarating walk of 23 miles and a climb of 1600 metres we were all thrilled but exhausted by our achievement!
Fundraising is continuing and is on target to hit at least £750.00.
